KAI-OS TO MAKE PHONES SMARTER

In an attempt to make low-cost feature phones smarter, Google plans to upgrade it's Assistant with "voice typing" for KaiOS - a Firefox based light operating system.
In a blog post, Google announced that the Google Assistant will Voice Typing "over the coming months," allowing KaiOS users to dictate text messages, web searches and basically anything else that uses a text box.
KaiOS and the Assistant can also be set to different languages, according to Google.
KaiOS is a spiritual successor to the ultimately doomed Firefox OS.
The company took the web-based platform and optimized it for cheap, non-touch devices in 2016.
Google had launched a primitive version of the Assistant, alongside Google Maps and search, on the KaiOS-powered Nokia 8110 4G, last year.
Four months later, it invested$22 million in KaiOS and promised to make its services available to all KaiOS users.
It was a surprising move KaiOS is based on Firefox, a chrome competitor - but made sense given how KaiOS appeals to the people who can't afford even the cheapest Android Go hardware.

BRAZEN XIAOMI RIPPING OFF APPLE AGAIN

In an yet another brazen inspiration from Apple, xiaomi, which launched Mi 9 on Wednesday, has implemented macOS Mojave's signature wall-paper that changes it's color scheme according to the time in it's latest flagship smartphone.
Xiaomi, it seems, made no attempts to even hide the fact that they replicated the neat little feature from macOS.
Mi 9 doesn't even feel the need to change the background. Rather, it goes ahead with a similar sand dunes in the background. This is embarrassing obvious and brazen.
Unlike Chinese firms, which are known to copy features from Apple. Xiaomi has built a goodWill over the past couple of years. This is likely to impact the goodWill in a big way.

While many concepts have popped up, Cnet says, the image underscores the industry's growing interest in foldable devices.
But, back in 2016, Lenovo, in one of it's first few foldable prototypes, unveiled a bracelet watch design.
While further details remain scarce, the renders, which Cnet got from a patent filling, are reportedly in the works are not just the options that TCL wants to move it's foldable phone.

GOOGLE ALLOWS USERS TO TEST AR NAVIGATION

Tech giant Google, in the 2018 I/O developer's conference, showed off a new augmented reality feature for Google Maps, which provide people with directions from your phone's camera in realtime.
As of February 2019, the feature is still a long way from being rolled out. But, some users have started to test this new navigation feature, report The Verge. It "isn't likely to be your primary turn-by- turn option, it's a huge step in the right direction for Google Maps," WSJ's David Pierce, who got to try out an early version of the feature, said in the report.
Mr Pierce went on to describe how the feature worked-the app picks up a person's location via GPS and then uses Street View data to narrow it down to your exact location. Once his location was pinned down, it display big arrows and directions in his screen.
"It was as if Maps had drawn my directions onto the real world, though nobody else could see them.
He goes on to say that the app doesn't appear to let use the camera persistently.

FACEBOOK PAYS ITS USERS TO USE VPN THAT SNOOPS

It has been paying users to download Research app, gather data
Soon after Facebook drew global flak for planning to integrate its three power-house messaging platforms - Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram - into one giant data quarry, the social media platform has been caught paying teens and young adults for (almost0 unfettered access to their phones.
Desperate for data on its competitors, Facebook has been secretly paying people to install a "Facebook Research" VPN that lets the company suck in all of a user's phone and web activity, similar to Facebook's Onavo protect app that Apple banned in June and that was removed in August, TechCrunch reported.
In an investigation, TechCrunch confirms that Facebook avoids the AppStore and rewards teenagers and adults to download the Research app.
This enables Facebook to get root access to network traffic in what may be violation of Apple policy so the social network can decrypt and analyze their phone activity.
Facebook acknowledged that it was running the Research program to harvest data on usage habits.
Since 2016, Facebook has been paying users (between 13 years to 35 years) up to $20 per month plus referral fees to sell their privacy by installing the iOS or Android "Facebook Research" app.
Facebook even asked users to screenshot their Amazon order history page.
The program is administered through beta testing services Applause, BetaBound and test to cloak Facebook involvement, and is referred to in some documentation as "Project Atlas"- a fitting name for Facebook's effort to map new trends and rivals around the globe.
The strategy shows how far Facebook is willing to go and how much it's willing to pay to protect its dominance - even at the risk of breaking the rules of Apple's iOS platform on which it depends.
The situation could further chill relations between the tech giants, Apple's Tim Cook has repeatedly criticised Facebook's data collection practises.
Facebook disobeying iOS policies to slurp up more information could become a new talking point..

ANDROID Q MAY HAVE NATIVE FACE ID FEATURE

In the race to introduce secure facial authentication, Apple's iOS may have taken the lead with Face ID but if reports are to be believed then Android Q is likely to catch up with iOS.
According to a report on XDADevelopers, the upcoming Android OS may ditch the insecure "Trusted Face" feature, which is part of Google play Services has existed for many years now, in favour of a revamped feature.
While Apple iPhone X was the first to combine a Time of Flight (TOF) sensor, IR illuminator, dot projector, and other sensors for hardware facial recognition (Apple calls it 'Face ID'), other Android device makers have adopted similar features but have had to heavily customize Android to support this new hardware.
However, it seems that Google is working on bringing native support for secure facial recognition hardware in Android Q.

GOOGLE TAKES AIM AT IMPOSTER WEBSITE WITH NEW WARNING.

Fake website have been a thorn for long with many fraudulent websites using tricks to make their URLs look like the real deal, carefully checking the URL is one approach to avoiding danger. Now, Google wants to call them out. The company is working on a new warning in its Chrome browser.
It would appear when you're visiting a site that's mimicking a well-known web page.
For example, if you actually meant to go to "pay-pal.com" when you were headed to a look alike scam site called "paypal.com" instead.
It will help to ease the pressure off you to notice when somethings wrong with the URL.
That's important because most people don't notice when they're headed off to a scam site, Google Chrome engineer Emily Stark said in a talk at the Enigma Conference, a security and privacy event.
"What people are seeing in the URL bar really just isn't helpful to them as a security mechanism," Stark said.
The warning could help make it harder to carry out on one of the most pervasive and effective hacking attacks out there - phishing. If users heed Chrome warnings, it could save them from entering user names, passwords or credit card information into website controlled by criminals.
It could also keep them from downloading malicious software at scam websites that could do things like encrypt their data and demand a ransom.
Scammy websites use s number of tricks to look legitimate in that URL field at the top of your web browser.
They might use a slight misspelling, or swap out the number one for a lowercase letter L to look a legitimate website.
The latter is called a homograph attack, and it's powerful because it usually involves characters that the untrained eye will miss.

                        CHINA REMOVED 8K MALICIOUS APPS

China's cyber watchdog said it had deleted about 8,000 "malicious" mobile apps, as it step up efforts to tighten control over the country's Internet.
The Cyberspace Administration of china (CAC) said in a statement it had ordered telecom operators to shut down the services of 7,873 apps after finding they had overcharged and cheated users as well as stolen information.
It launched the campaign in September with other Chinese government ministers to target "malicious mobile apps that infringe on users' rights", the agency said.
Among the apps targeted by the agency was a Chinese version of "Fruit Ninja", which caused economic losses to users by tricking them into signing up to unwanted fee-based service, the agency said.
They are three games names "Fruit Ninja" registered with China's publishing regulator, and it was unclear which one was deleted by the CAC. A game with the same name was previously launched by iDreamSky and distributed by Tencent in 2013. However, it was later removed from all channels in 2016, according to iDreamSky.
Other games such as "Bathroom Goddess" and "Naughty Housemaid" that was developed and published by other firms committed "online hooligan activities" like information theft, spamming, and forced downloads.
Chin's video game market, the world's largest, has been under strict scrutiny since last year when authorities stopped approving new titles for almost a year. it recently resumed approvals but industry leaders Tencent and NetEase have yet to receive any.
Political control of the Internet has also tightened under President Xi Jinping, an effort that has accelerated since 2016 as the ruling Communist Party seeks to crack down on dissent on social media.
The CAC on Wednesday said it had deleted more than 7 million pieces of online information as well as 9,382 mobile apps, and criticised a news app run by Tencent for spreading "vulgar and low-brow information".

A NEW PRIVACY OPTION HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE FIREFOX

In the recently released FireFox 65 update, Mozilla has rolled out a new interface that makes it easier to fine-tune control over trackers.

While the basic options are still pretty similar to what was offered in the old version, most user will still be choosing through what FireFox now calls "standard" mode, which block trackers in private (i.e., incognito) windows and "strict" mode, which blocks trackers at all time (but may cause issues with some websites).
But in FireFox 65, the browser puts these choices far more prominently in front of users, in addition to offering better explanations as to what each option actually entails. There is also a new custom mode control (in addition to the previously offered "exception" option that let people white list specific sites for all three modes).

iOS 12.1.3 UPDATE DOESN'T FIX CONNECTIVITY BUG

Users around the world were eagerly awaiting for Apple in release the iOS 12.1.3 update for iPhone and iPad users in hopes that it would address issues related to connectivity.
Sadly, the update, which is being rolled out for a few day now, is an incremental release with only bug fixes but it fails to address one of the biggest issues flagged on previous iOS versions: connectivity.
Since the release of iOS 12.1.1, users have been reporting cases of broken cellular data and WI-FI.
While everyone isn't facing the problem, has only grown worse with every update, including the latest one.
iOS 12.1.3 promises to fix multiple bugs, including those that may have prevented you from scrolling photos in Messages. However, it skips the data-killing bug, with several users still losing 3G/4G connectivity from their devices, falling to connect to the Internet or even make calls.
So, it is recommended to refrain from updating to the latest version of iOS.

FB SET TO USE ONE PLATFORM FOR ALL APPS

Integrating services could make it harder for regulators to break up Facebook by undoing its acquisitions.
Facebook  CEO MarkZuckerberg is planning to unify the underlying messaging infrastructure of the WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger services and incorporate end-to-end encryption into these apps, the New York Times reported on Friday. The three services will, however, continue as stand-alone apps, the report said, citing four people involved in the effort.
Facebook said it is working on adding end-to-end encryption, which protects messages from being viewed by anyone except the participants in a conversation, to more of its messaging products, and considering ways to make it easier for users to connect across networks.
"There is alot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work," a spokesperson said.
After the changes, a Facebook user, for instance, will be able send an encrypted message to someone who has only a WhatsApp account, according to report.
Integration the messaging services could make it harder for antitrust regulators to break up Facebook by undoing its acquisitions of WhatApp and Instagram, said SamWeinstein, a professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
"If Facebook is worried about that then one way it can defend itself is to integrate those services," Weinstein said.
But Weinstein said  breaking up Facebook is viewes as an "extreme remedy" by regulators, particularly in the United States, so concerns over antitrust scrutiny may not have been a factor behind the integration.

                        MAJOR TRADEOFFS
Some former security engineers and an outside encryption expert said the plan could be good news for user privacy, in particular by extending end-to-end encryption.
"I'm cautiously optimistic it's a good thing," said former Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos, who now teaches at Stanford University. "My fear was that they were going to drop end-to-end encryption."
However, the technology does not always conceal meta data - information about who is talking to about whom - sparking concern among some researchers that the data might be shared.
Any meta data integration likely will let Facebook learn more about users, linking identifiers such as phone numbers and email addresses for those using the services independently of each other.
Facebook could use that data to charge more for advertising and targeted services, although it also would have to forgo ads based on messenger content in Messenger and Instagram.
Other major tradeoffs will have to be made too, Stamos and others said.
Messenger allows strangers to contact people without knowing their phone numbers, for example, increasing the risk of stalking and approaches to children.
Systems based on phone numbers have additional privacy concerns, because governments and other entities can easily extract location information from them.

                        ROBOCOP DOG

                        CHOCO AIBO

Sony has announced the first new color variant of its AIBO ROBOT DOG. The "Choco Edition" Aibo has a coat in two pleasant shades of brown, retaining the white legs and paws.
It's available for pre-order in japan and is priced at 1,98,00 yen or $1,800. Sony has also coined the word "securitainment" to describe the concept of a cute robot dog patrolling your house and reporting on what it finds.

Sony's puppy-sized robot dog aibo, equipped with cameras, artificial intelligence and Internet capability, can now remotely check up on family members, children or even pets, the Japanese electronics giant said on Wednesday. The 30-centimetre (one-foot) robopup with flapping ears and cutting-edge LED eyes will roam around the home at predesignated times looking for family members.
However, the latest canine tech does not come cheap. with single dog costing nearly $3,000 for a three-year package, including software services such as data storage.
The owner will receive progress reports via smart phone in the service offered from next month in conjunction with home security company Secom.
"you will be able to check how remote family members are doing or what children are doing when they get home," project chief Izumi Kawanishi told reporters at the Sony headquarters in Tokyo. "we aim to make you feel a bit more secure by living with aibo and have fun," added kawanishi.
The gadget will also be able to watch over real pets in the future thanks to image recognition and learning capabilities, he said.
The latest aibo model, which can also display "emotions", was released in January last year and sales hit 20,000 in the first six, months, according to Sony.
In the era of the Internet of things and facing a rapidly ageing population, japan has mobilised rice cookers, electric pots and other household devices to keep watch on elderly people living alone.
They transmit data to families living far away on how often they have been used. If they have not been used for a while, this could be an ominous sign.
